What If You Were No One? Escaping the Trap of Roles in the Dream of the World

symbole de l’ego et des rôles illusoires

"You think you're a woman, a man, a mother, a teacher, a therapist, or even a president? Congratulations. You've really lost yourself in the script."

We slip them on like neatly pressed costumes: roles. Mom. Guide. Spiritual coach. Rebel. Savior. Broken one. Healer. Leader. Master. Even "the one who doesn't want roles anymore" is still a role.

And meanwhile, the dream goes on.

A Course in Miracles says:

"The world is an illusion. Those who choose to identify with it become the guardians of the lie."

But let's be honest… we're attached to our costumes. We sewed them ourselves, out of old stories, unseen wounds and titles that shine like medals on a papier-mâché uniform.

Quotes that sting: Arten, Pursah & the art of enlightened sarcasm

In The Disappearance of the Universe, Arten and Pursah are champions at dismantling the ego, spiritual-humor style. Remember this one?

"Let him dream, he thinks he's the president of the United States. Somebody has to play that role in the play, right?"

Or this one:

"You know, Gary, people chase their little titles and crowns as if they meant something. They fight over a scrap of nothing in a dream that doesn't even exist."

And this one:

"Oh, look at me, I have a big office and everyone listens to me. Seriously, Gary, if you could see it from here, you'd be laughing with us."

It makes you smile. Until you realize that this character isn't just "other people"… it's you.

The trap of the spiritual role (and of the one who no longer has one)

Ah, that role is a sneaky one. It speaks softly. It meditates. It eats healthy. It says "namaste" instead of hello. It posts Eckhart Tolle quotes on Instagram and above all, above all, it never gets angry anymore (except inwardly, when its wisdom isn't recognized).

But the Course is unequivocal:

"You do not need to add to yourself what cannot be taken away. You are already as God created you."

Translation: you have nothing to prove, nothing to heal, nothing to defend. Not even your mission of light.

The ego's favorite role? Being special.

Being the one who does things differently. Better. More awake, purer, freer.

But deep down, the ego has no real hierarchy. It doesn't care whether you think you're the president or "the wounded woman who only ever serves others and never receives"

as long as you believe you are separate, it wins.

And while you play your favorite role, you forget that all of this is only a dream.

You are not your story

You are not your Instagram account.

You are not your latest trauma.

You are not "the one who fights for divine justice".

You aren't even "the one who wants to awaken".

You are… what observes all of this. The background. The gaze. The silence.

And this silence, as the Course says, is the peace of God.

So… what do we do?

Nothing.

Or rather: you look.

You see the dream. You see the masks. You see the attachments. And you choose again.

"Choose again. Choose with me. Choose joy instead of pain. Choose peace instead of conflict. Choose to remember instead of forgetting." (ACIM)

You can keep playing, of course. But play knowing it's only a game. Hand your role over to the Holy Spirit every morning, and ask:

"Use this form, but don't let me get lost in it."

And if one day your character changes name, job or country, you'll smile. Because you were never really attached to it.

In short, if you want to have fun:

• Observe your characters like carnival costumes.

• Notice how the ego always wants to add: a title, a function, a mission.

• Notice that what you are never changes.

• Choose peace, not performance.

• Remember: "You are as you were created."

And the next time you see someone taking themselves seriously, tell yourself gently, laughing inside:

"Let him be… He thinks he's president."
